Do you cook this Bitter gourd type? We call it as ‘Thumba Kariwila’ in Sri Lanka. However, what we found in Sri Lanka is smaller in size. Sometimes we find this vegetable in Little India –Singapore, those are little bit bigger than the ones we find in Sri Lanka.I cook it with tomato and coconut milk. It is good in taste and well goes with plain rice and other sides.

If you check this Mild spicy pumpkin curry or pumpkin kalu pol, you will see that the recipe require some ground coconut paste. In this recipe, we do not use grated coconut. Instead, we add mustard seeds paste. She simply cooked pumpkin with Sri Lankan raw curry powder and other spices. Finally added the mustard paste.

Deviled Cauliflower

Deviled Cauliflower

We like Cauliflower in our daily cooking. But, I don’t like to cook Cauliflower as a curry always. I tried it as a spicy appetizer and came out very well. Actually I used Sri Lankan style Chicken devil recipe and substituted cauliflower instead of chicken. Also did some changes to spices. Final outcome was really good.
On the other way, Cauliflower is a vegetable which is good to add into regular diet because of its health benefits. Do you know, it is a very good source of vitamin C? I never thought! But found while reading some articles on Cauliflower healthy benefits and amazed to see it is a rich source for vitamin B & C.

Sri Lankan Soya Meat Curry

Sri Lankan Soya Meat Curry
Sri Lankan Soya Meat Curry
This Soya Meat Curry is cooked using Raw Curry Powder. I usually cook soya meat at home as it is a good source of veggie protein. However I always buy plain soya chunks without the spice and flavor sachets. In that way I am sure it is a dish with no added MSG. Usually I buy few packs from Sri Lanka every time I visit which is enough for few months. One reason is that the chunks are smaller and therefore it is tastier.Anyway my main reason is that they are certified as GMO free products. (Not a Genetically modified food).Still in Singapore, I couldn’t find a Soya meat brand which claims as a non GMO product.(oh I can’t stay away from my habit of reading the whole label before purchasing anything :) )

Wattakka Kalu Pol Maluwa (Sri Lankan Pumpkin Curry)

Sri Lanka Pumpkin Curry Recipe

Wattakka or Pumpkin is a veggie which we can cook in different style. This Wattakka Kalu Pol maluwa looks darker as we use roasted spices & coconut. For a Sri Lankan, I am sure this is one of the favourites. Wattakka can be cooked in a curry which gives an appearance of white or yellowish. That is a different recipe using green chilli. Some, they use oil and fry onion and red chili before adding pumpkin. But I do not use oil here as this recipe is loaded with coconut milk & grated coconut. Still this is tasty and I believe bit healthier than adding oil.

Sri Lankan Bandakka Salada (Ladies Fingers / Okra Salad Recipe)

Bandakka or Lady Finger is a vegetable which has a watery taste. In Sri Lanka, we have different recipes with Bandakka (okra), however normally I cook another spicy dish if I cook bandakka. If not, it is difficult to match the taste of the meal. Few years ago I tasted Bandakka Salada in a buffet in a Sri Lankan restaurant. I cannot remember the exact location or name, anyway it was in Galle road between  Kaluthara and Colombo. That was really tasty. After that day, Bandakka Salada included in my menu time to time. For this recipe, adjust salt, pepper & lime juice as per your taste. Then, I am sure you would love Sri Lankan Bandakka Salada much!
